If you know me well, you know that my husband and I recently moved into a new apartment. Ok…not really “recently”, more like last Halloween, but it still feels new to us because we’re not done decorating. You just can’t rush these things! Part of the reason it’s taken so long, is that we only want to purchase home goods from companies that care about the well being of their employees and the environment as much as they care about their profits. After doing some research I’ve found that there are some really fantastic options available, but while a couple are affordable, many of them are out of my price range. I expect ethically made items to cost more, because their makers are compensated fairly and better materials are being used, but I’ve always had champagne taste on a beer bottle budget. These days I have biodynamic champagne taste on a fair trade amber ale budget (yep those are both real drinks) so you can imagine my delight when I discovered LaBu — a #forgood marketplace where you can find stunning, artisan crafted home goods for under $100. Check out my list of favorites below and let me know what you think. Each of these items would be sold for at least double the price at a high end store, yet they are better quality than their mass produced competition. I call that a win-win!
1.) Ceramic Cactus
This retro-inspired ceramic cactus is the perfect ring holder and a needed addition to your shelf. Each sculpture is hand shaped and carved by an artist in Los Angeles who designed the piece with the intention to be purposeful with waste. These once unused scraps became a best seller; best decision ever!
These gorgeous salad servers are crafted by Indian artisans out of rosewood and brass. Their design is flawless — from their brushed brass pin details, to the subtle tapering of their handles. A set like this is the perfect housewarming gift for anyone with a midcentury modern design aesthetic.
This is hands down the most striking french press I’ve ever seen. The grey borosilicate glass keeps your coffee warm by withstanding extreme temperatures, and provides the perfect contrast to the copper pull. Keep this out on your counter and prepare for lots of oohs and aahs.
These ruggedly beautiful copper bowls can be used throughout the home to store anything you please, from jewelry to salt. They are handmade by an artisan in Los Angeles and hammered into an organic circular shape. You may opt to polish the bottom of your bowl for a classic, bright copper look, but I prefer the patina you see below.
This hanging carved orb was the first thing that caught my eye at LaBu. As popular as hanging planters are, I’ve never seen one quite like this before! My eye is drawn to the bright contrast in the piece — I love the combination of the cheerful blue suede with the earthy tones in the pottery. Each orb is hand carved by an artisan in Los Angeles.
A signature scent in your home adds to the ambiance just as much as your decor does. This rosemary mint scented candle will put guests at ease while boosting your energy. Browse the other scents on the site, and pick which one is right for you. Each candle is ethically made in Vancouver using recycled glass jars, and you can rest assured knowing they are free from phthalates, petroleum and GMOs.
These lovely serving boards are handmade by artisans in India. Each one has a unique wood grain, providing you with a one-of-a-kind charcuterie presentation.
